Which bouquet should you offer for each occasion? The complete Poésie Fleurie guide
Giving flowers: a universal gift, but not always easy to choose
Flowers are one of the most sincere gifts there is. They cross cultures, ages and occasions. And yet, when faced with a bouquet to compose or order, many people feel stuck: Which flowers for a birthday? Can you offer chrysanthemums? Is white only for funerals?
As a florist in Toulouse at Poésie Fleurie, I answer these questions every day. Here is my guide for the most common occasions.
For a birthday
This is the most festive occasion, and it allows plenty of freedom. Choose joyful colours and flowers with character:
- In spring: ranunculus, two-tone tulips, anemones
- In summer: sunflowers, zinnias, gerberas, colourful dahlias
- In autumn: cafe dahlias, amaranth, celosia in orange and burgundy tones
- In winter: amaryllis, quality roses, hellebores
Léa's advice: avoid an all-white bouquet for a birthday (too solemn) and choose a mix of 3 to 5 complementary colours instead. A "country-style" bouquet with green foliage and textured flowers is always appreciated, whatever the age.
For a birth
A birth is a delicate occasion: parents are tired, often in a hospital room, then in a home suddenly full of things. The ideal bouquet is soft, not too large, and with little strong fragrance.
Recommended flowers:
- White or pale pink peonies if they are in season
- Lisianthus — elegant, lightly scented, long-lasting
- Pastel roses — classic but effective
- Gypsophila — light, airy, perfect for a birth
Colours: for a girl, powder pink and white. For a boy, lavender blue, white and sage green. For a surprise, white and green.
Léa's advice: offer the bouquet a few days after the parents return home. In the first few days, they often already have too many flowers and not enough energy to care for them.
For Mother's Day
Mother's Day falls in May, right in peony season. It is hard to do better. The peony is the Mother's Day flower par excellence: generous, fragrant and fleeting.
If peonies are not available (the floral calendar can be temperamental), consider:
- late ranunculus
- iris
- garden roses
- alstroemeria in a country-style arrangement
Avoid bouquets that feel too much like "classic supermarket florist" arrangements: choose long stems, natural foliage and slightly wild compositions. You can see the difference immediately.
For bereavement or condolences
This is a delicate subject, and there are many preconceived ideas. A few clarifications:
White is not reserved for funerals. But for this occasion, white, cream and discreet green tones are the most respectful. Bright or festive colours are best avoided.
Chrysanthemum is still traditionally associated with cemeteries in France, so it is better to avoid it for a condolence bouquet given in person, unless you know the family appreciates them.
Recommended flowers for bereavement:
- white or soft purple lisianthus
- white roses
- white carnations, a symbol of respect
- eucalyptus branches
- hellebores in winter
The arrangement should be sober, without flashy wrapping.
To say thank you or congratulations
A thank-you bouquet is a warm message. It does not need to be grandiose: a lovely bouquet of 5 to 7 carefully chosen stems is enough.
- Professional thank you: terracotta or burgundy roses + foliage — elegant without being excessive
- Congratulations (success, promotion, diploma): yellow and orange — colours of achievement and energy
- Friendly thank you: wild and country-inspired, depending on the season
For Valentine's Day
The red rose? Yes, if that is what you love. No, it is not mandatory. As a florist, every year I meet clients looking for something different — and they are right.
A few romantic alternatives:
- Two-tone tulips in season — poetic and original
- Anemones — velvety, deep, intense
- Ranunculus — generous, full and romantic
- Garden roses — less perfect than standardized roses, but much more beautiful
What matters is the intention. A bouquet designed for the person — with their favourite flowers, colours and personality — is always better than an impersonal classic.
