Christmas Window Displays
Decorating Christmas window displays with flowers: a magical and intense adventure
Late November and early December are always a whirlwind for florists. Between bouquet orders, workshops and, above all, Christmas window displays, the pace is intense. This year, as a freelance florist in Toulouse with Poésie Fleurie, I had the chance to decorate several shop windows for local businesses. It was rewarding, but also demanding. So how do you handle such a busy period? Here are a few lessons and behind-the-scenes stories for florists and curious clients.
Why add flowers to Christmas window displays?
Christmas window displays are much more than a simple decoration: they tell a story and catch the eye of people passing by. For a shop, a carefully decorated window is a real asset:
- Attract attention: in a busy street, a magical window display invites people to stop, look and perhaps step inside.
- Create a warm atmosphere: a festive display evokes the magic of the holidays and creates an emotional connection with customers.
- Stand out: in a highly competitive season, a thoughtful window reflects the originality and care a business puts into its image.
For me, every window display is a chance to highlight the shop while adding my own floral and artistic touch.
A busy but exciting schedule
This year, I worked on several Christmas windows. Between freelance shifts in flower shops, studio work and window installations, my schedule was full. Every project became a new adventure: choosing the flowers, designing a decoration that matched the shop's theme, and of course installing everything on site.
But honestly, this season also comes with pressure. As a freelancer, I am responsible for the final result: everything has to be right. I lost count of the short nights and the days spent running from one place to another. Sometimes you wonder whether you will ever see the end of it.
Handling the pressure: mastering the art of organization
The key word for surviving this intense period? Organization. Here are my tips:
- Plan ahead: list every project and prioritize them. Each window requires specific preparation, so anticipate as much as possible.
- Communicate clearly with clients: define expectations and needs together to avoid surprises.
- Take breaks: it may sound counterintuitive, but a rested mind is far more efficient.
- Surround yourself with the right people: whether it is another florist, a handy friend or simply someone who listens, support makes all the difference.
DIY and floral decorations: my funny beginnings
One part of the job I had not anticipated was DIY. Before getting started, I had never used a drill and barely knew what wall plugs were. The first time I had to secure floral decorations, I found myself facing a wall, literally. 😅
Thankfully, with a few Google searches and help from loved ones, I learned quickly. There are tutorials for everything, from basic DIY to tips for creating strong and attractive fixtures. A few tools quickly became essential:
- A hot glue gun: perfect for fixing delicate elements.
- Screws, wall plugs and wood screws: essential for securing floral decorations properly.
- Floral wire: a must-have for attaching and shaping compositions.
The joy of creating: my biggest motivation
Despite the fatigue and the unexpected problems, decorating windows with flowers remains deeply satisfying. Seeing shop owners light up when they discover their transformed window, hearing compliments from passers-by... that is an invaluable reward.
Every window tells a unique story. Whether it is minimalist, poetic or flamboyant, it reflects both the shop's identity and my own creativity. This year again, I learned, grew and, above all, loved every moment of this floral marathon.
When should you contact a florist for a Christmas window display?
This is a question many Toulouse shop owners ask me. Ideally, contact your florist as early as October. November and December are peak season: schedules fill up fast, raw materials become more expensive, and a good floral decoration needs preparation.
A few points to discuss during the first conversation:
- the theme you want: natural, luxury, country-inspired, contemporary...
- the colors of the shop and storefront
- the practical constraints: type of window, access, allowed fixing materials
- the overall budget for the decoration
The earlier the collaboration starts, the closer the result will be to your vision, and the calmer the schedule will be for everyone.
